The background removal is wild. No green screen, no cloud upload. It just runs on your Mac, keeps the original clip intact, and lets you refine edges if you need to. As someone who is tired of apps phoning home with my footage, the local-only processing is a genuine relief.
I’m also a sucker for the motion graphics workflow; you can write TSX compositions and render them frame-exact on the timeline. For devs who want to tweak text and animations in code rather than hunting through dropdown menus, it’s genuinely joyful.
And the free plan is actually free. Whole editor, no account, no forced trial countdown. You only pay when you need 4K, ProRes, or the premium looks. That feels honest.

Writing motion graphics in code and layering them straight into my footage is a joy. I also like that I get to choose which local AI models get downloaded to my machine, for things like transcription, depth estimation and background removal. Only installing what I actually need for a project is really nice.

Yes. The free plan is the whole editor: record your screen and camera, edit on a multi-track timeline, remove backgrounds from people, add titles and effects, and export up to 1080p at 30 fps. It does not expire and you do not need an account to edit.
Every title style, filter and camera frame, all cut-out models with live background removal, depth occlusion, 3D surfaces and motion tracking, and exports at 4K, 60 fps and ProRes. Studio is $15.99 USD a month, renewing until cancelled, or a single $159 USD payment for lifetime access. When an offer is running, the discounted price is shown on the plans and applied automatically at checkout.
Yes. On the free plan every Studio feature can be added to a project and previewed in the editor. Only exporting a project that uses them needs Studio, and the export sheet lists exactly which clips do.
Yes. Select a clip and turn on background removal. The free plan includes a model for people; Studio adds the other cut-out models. Results depend on the footage, so check the cut-out through the whole clip and refine the edges where needed. The original clip is always kept.
No. Recording, editing and background removal run on your Mac. Optional AI assistance with Codex uses the official Codex CLI and your own account, and is never needed to edit.
Not yet. On Mac, ZXN Studio records your screen, camera and a microphone or audio-interface input. It does not capture the sound other apps are playing.
Yes. Screen and camera land on the timeline as separate clips, so you can trim the edit and change the camera frame, size and position after recording.
